Packaging and machine feeding put workers at the in-running nips and moving parts of case erectors, form-fill-seal machines, shrink wrappers, and palletizers. The dominant hazards are machine contact and the hazardous energy released during the frequent jam clearing that packaging lines demand, alongside repetitive hand feeding and sustained noise.
Packaging lines are full of in-running nips. Rollers, belts, sealing bars, and wrapping arms pull material through, and a hand feeding or clearing product can be pulled in with it. Because packaging jams frequently, the highest-risk task is not running the machine but reaching in to clear it, often while the line is still energized. Machine guarding and lockout during jam clearing are the controls that most directly prevent amputations and crush injuries.
The rest of the exposure is chronic. Hand-feeding cartons, inserts, and product at line speed is repetitive work that loads the hands, wrists, and shoulders, and the packaging hall is typically loud enough to require a hearing conservation program. Heat from shrink tunnels and sealing bars adds a burn hazard. The practical program guards the nips, controls the energy for jam clearing, designs the feeding task to cut repetition, and manages the noise at the source.

In-running nip and amputation

- Automate or assist high-repetition feeding tasks
- Set feeding height and reach to a neutral posture
- Rotate workers and build in recovery time

Noise on the packaging line
Compressors, blowers, and machine motion make packaging halls loud enough to threaten hearing. A hearing conservation program applies at or above the 85 dBA action level.
- Reduce noise at the source with mufflers and enclosures
- Isolate the noisiest equipment and limit exposure time
- Run a hearing conservation program at the action level
- Provide hearing protection matched to the exposure
- Monitor noise and conduct audiometric testing

Nip points are guarded and feeding is designed so hands never enter the hazard zone. The most common severe injury comes from reaching into a running machine, so the layout has to make the safe method the natural one.

Clearing a jam starts with lockout and verification, because jam clearing is the task that most exposes workers to unexpected motion. Making safe access quick reduces the temptation to reach in without isolating energy.
Hearing conservation
Where the line reaches the action level, a hearing conservation program with monitoring, audiometry, and protection is in place. Source controls come before relying on earplugs.
